kaleidoscopic-void:

Captivating? Daryl would laugh if asked such a thing. He’d say she was hardly captivating. Just a distraction from his wonderful life in Arcadios… She was really nothing but a girl he happened to recognize in this strange world. In a sense, the lieutenant was quite relieved to see someone else he was familiar with in this world..

Y’know. No matter how bothersome of a runt this familiar person happened to be.

Of course she owed him, are you crazy? Forcing him to carry all those heavy boxes along with whatever else she had forced on him… Wasn’t it obvious that our lovable lieutenant didn’t normally do any grunt work? That was always left for someone else to take care of.. Whether he was in some sort of disguise or not, Tsugumi had no right to force such hard work on him. It was only natural that he owed her more than a cheap candy apple.

Honestly.

“Tch.” Now. Normally.. Such a smirk wouldn’t bother him so much. And if it did happen to bother him? The person wouldn’t be alive very long. Tsugumi was a special case, apparently. Even as she was being so smug with Kill ‘Em All Daryl.. His first reaction wasn’t to rid himself of the annoyance. It wasn’t just to kill her off… Instead, Daryl hesitated. Fists clenched and he was scowling in response to her words.

“Haaah?”

Polite? She wanted him to be polite?! After she had shoved boxes into his arms without much warning and again… Forced him to accept something that he clearly did not want.. Well he hadn’t wanted it at first anyway. Either way! There was no way he was going to show her any sort of respect after that. He intended to bully her, didn’t he? Torment her. Hassle her as much as possible until she regretted her actions. It was to be her punishment.

Though instead of showing her this divine punishment… The young lieutenant stomped his foot in rebellion. “No way! There’s no way I’m going to be nice to you! Stupid runt!” The girl’s smile grew and he only grew more irritated with her, face flushed with anger. Or embarrassment but he preferred to be angry.

It was then that he decided to act rather than to just stand there. He took one or two steps closer.. Just enough to give the headband of sorts that was atop Tsugumi’s head a flick. That was about as much touching as you’d get from the boy… Even here. One could never be too cautious about infection and the spreading of diseases! Especially when surrounded by filth!

“Ahah! You expect me to take you seriously while you wear such silly things all the time? You’re so weird!“

Juvenile, really… Like a little boy pulling a girl’s hair on the playground. With both hands on his hips again, he shrugged lazily.

“If anything you should be showing me respect, runt. You’re lost here, aren’t you? Don’t think you’re so mighty or I’ll just leave you behind.”

Punishment? Would Daryl be the divine retribution she’d receive after oh-so-horribly handing over a treat as a reward for his assistance? That’d be a sight to see. If anything, the worst he could do would threaten her to the point where she’d die of laughter - because they were all so pathetic! Didn’t he have anything better to do with himself? Had picking on small girls become a hobby?

Not that Tsugumi was weak by any means. She just lacked in height.

To taunt him, she leaned the slightest bit closer towards him. ‘Tsun’, he says, ‘tsuuun’!Apparently, she’d managed to translate his exclamations into words she understood - though he wouldn’t be left to be the last one laughing. She’d - unintentionally, of course - make the rest of his stay here a living hell, even if he did ever manage to ‘bully’ her like he’d so emptily threatened her. Until that day came, she’d wait with her nose in the air and her chest puffed out in her glory. Because he’d never be able to scare her in the slightest.

Especially if she’d be able to tear his poor little dignity to shreds. He didn’t like her cat ears, did he? If he didn’t, she’d just have to teach him how to get used to them. If Ayase (barely) managed to tolerate her odd taste in clothes, then it wouldn’t be a feat for him to learn how to accept her wonderful cat ears. Wonderful, splendiferous cat ears.

Aaand— She placed the headband on his head, be he willing or otherwise. — there we go! Incredibly proud of her actions, she placed her hands on her hips and nodded affirmatively. This was good. She’d definitely be able to work with this now. Much better!

She could assess what damage had been done later. She’d be much too busy admiring her work of art standing before her— she wouldn’t be all too surprised if this ‘work of art’ decided to snap her hair accessory into two and stomp on it until all that remained were shattered remnants of what it once was.

Funny, that. She’d done the same thing to his dignity - inadvertantly, too!

If anything you should be showing me respect, runt.

‘Oh, ouji-sama—!’ Is that something I’m supposed to say? Her smile only grew further. If it hadn’t been obvious earlier, it was clear that she aimed to provoke him until she’d gotten a proper reaction from him— ‘proper’ being something particularly explosive on his behalf.

So, the question remained— how long would it take before he snapped?

TECHNOPHILE!

I think you just need a candy apple to make yourself feel better, mister—!

melt-downer:

The sudden exclamation caused the esper to turn her head in the direction the sound came from. What was that she just saw? A girl throwing something to the ground, which resulted in it breaking ito pieces. Upon closer inspection, Mugino saw that it resembled a handheld computer and that the girl was obviously upset by something. Amused by this, Mugino turned and took several steps in the dark-haired girl’s direction. Ordinarily, she wouldn’t have bothered, but the girl’s reaction was similar to her own  upon first arriving in Arcadios. The redhead still had a useless, top-of-the-line cellphone in her pocket from her Earth days that she couldn’t use. She remembered being irritated that she couldn’t get a signal for anything and couldn’t find out where she was or how she’d gotten here. Wasn’t that the same story everyone had, though? It was confusing, to say the least.
After a few seconds of debating, she decided to continue her stride toward the girl. There was something cute about her, so maybe she’d give her a few words of advice to set her along the right path.

Once Mugino had finally approached the girl, she reached into the right pocket of her coat and grabbed her cellphone, then held it up for emphasis. “Technology doesn’t work here. It’s upsetting to have to suddenly do without it.” At the end of her sentence, she slipped the dark blue phone back into her pocket and let her hands fall at her sides, the right one finding its way to her hip. It was annoying to think that she still had all of her contact information stored in her phone and that it would turn on, but there was no way to use that information. Since they were supposedly in another universe all together now, even if there was a satellite somehow launched into orbit, she doubted its signals would reach Earth. They were truly stranded in this place. “Get used to it, this is your home now.” The way her words came out made it obvious that she’d rather be back on Earth. If she knew of a way to send herself back, she’d do it, but without even know which galaxy or quadrant of the universe she was in, it was all completely futile.
The woman took a step closer and lightly nudged at the broken computer on the ground with her left foot, then glanced out the corner of her eye at the shorter girl, “Mugino Shizuri. What’s your name?”

While there’d be a number of ways in which they were similar, it’d take a lot for Tsugumi to come to terms with anything at the moment. As ignorant as it was, she didn’t want to have to admit that she’d be - more or less - hopeless until she lost her attachment to technology. Why, why was she sent here? She’d go back home to a world of peril and chaos if it meant being able to touch a computer again!

After mumbling a few things under her breath - probably cursing her misfortune and the fact that she had no access to her database whatsoever - she lifted her gaze to the side to find whoever had so succinctly told her that her computer was trash here. Go figure, she thought. Her eyes furrowed, the ends knitting at the bridge of her nose. Oh, how annoying it was to be told the obvious— Tsugumi had already figured out herself that technology was of no use to her here.

I live in Tokyo, not wherever this is—! Not unlike a princess who had been disappointed, she placed her hands on her hips and huffed. Yeah, right— she wasn’t going to take any of this crap in without evidence! But why weren’t her surroundings evidence enough? She wasn’t scared to admit that she’d lost everything she once knew, right? If she could live alone for what majority of her life she had lived, it wouldn’t be much different living here.. right?

She wouldn’t worry about her friends at home, right?

She rid herself of the thought with a scoff. Self-lamenting could come later - she had a much, much more important situation to deal with at hand.

Tsugumi. Her answer was blunt; she didn’t bother with courtesies, nor did she see much point in them. She didn’t offer her a smile, nor a hand to shake - just a small, condescending glance. She’d hoped to become accustomed to living alone again— there being a certain sense of peace in solitude - but, for the time being, she’d have to put her dreams aside and deal with whoever this was.

Or, she could make use of what information they had. This person could be a temporary replacement for her redundant computer until she found something that worked in this godforsaken hell hole.

Where’s the best place to get a new GPS? Assuming that they had that here, of course. This place wasn’t primitive or anything.. was it?

Why was she here?

Why?

Of all people…

Daryl wasn’t far off, watching Tsugumi anxiously. The girl who had forced a workload on him.. The stupid girl who had pretty much assaulted him while at the same time forcing some stupid gift on him.. Now we’re not saying that the gift wasn’t tasty but it was completely unnecessary and she was out of line when she offered it to him, obviously. He said he’d torment her.. Bully her whenever they happened to see each other again. To make up for the torment that she put him through, right? Those boxes were really heavy and he hadn’t been ready for them! So obviously she should have to pay for that…

And yet… He couldn’t quite bring himself up to approach her this time.

Instead, the lieutenant continued to watch her. He watched as the device hit the ground, scoffing softly. Well at least Tsugumi was figuring something out for herself… Useless girl. The blond waited another moment before finally trudging over.

Oi.”

Daryl kept his distance, of course, standing a few feet away from the girl. He forced a scowl, placing a hand on his hip as he studied her… To be sure that this was the same runt he had bumped into that day. Oh yes.. This was definitely her. Daryl shifted his position slightly, swallowing before he forced himself to speak again.

Runt. The hell are you doing here?”

Smooth.

For someone particularly intelligent, she was rather oblivious when it came to small details. Not once had it occurred to her that someone would be lurking within the area, watching her and her every move. Was she really that captivating?

It’d come to more of a shock when she discovered that this little ‘watcher’ was in fact someone she was familiar with. Hadn’t she paid him for his efforts already? He probably wouldn’t agree with her no matter how good that candy apple tasted. Did that mean she was still in debt to him for his lousy assistance?

That thought was worth a laugh— her owing him after she’d rewarded him for his work? He could wish upon a star all he liked - he’d have to accept the fact that she’d already paid back whatever ‘debt’ she owed him. If she could’ve had it her way, he’d be paying her for the fact that he seemed to have nothing better to do than to complain about boxes and bags and how he didn’t need to carry them.

She’d quite easily recognized Daryl to be that weak young man (if he deserved that title after struggling with a few boxes) she’d met a number of days ago— weeks, maybe? That wasn’t as important, though. At the very least, she could use him for assistance again - though he wouldn’t be carrying boxes as much as he would be explaining scenarios to her. Much easier, right?

The corners of her lips curled up into a smile; an ambiguous smile meant to be interpreted in a number of ways, though it seemed more smug if anything. His sharp, interrogative tone was probably meant to scare her - but it hadn’t sent even the slightest shiver up her spine. He was going to need to try harder than that to intimidate her (and prove that he was actually capable of ‘bullying’ her). Until her image of him had changed from that pathetic little weakling into something more, he was sure to have a lot of trouble with scaring her.

“Oi, oi. I’m not going to answer you if you’re not going to be polite.”

Her devious smile grew. Oh, he’d definitely be in for it now— especially if he’d completely despised her before.

Runt.

“I’ll make you cry.”

“Kyahaha—! You can’t even carry a few boxes!”

“Still owe me that ‘thank you’, you know?”

The fact that she’d been pried from her own home and placed into a completely different place— a different world, maybe - hadn’t particularly phased Tsugumi. It seemed much, much more peaceful than what she’d been used to back at home. A pleasant change, if anything. It was a hindrance not to have a surplus of information about her new surroundings, but at least with where she was, the world wasn’t collapsing around her. The world wasn’t deteriorating, and the end didn’t seem anywhere too close. The complete opposite of the chaotic hell hole she knew to be home.

If she hadn’t known any better, this must’ve been where she would’ve been sent after death, right?

She couldn’t help a giggle that slipped past her lips. How silly would that have been? A theory like that was ridiculous— Tsugumi wasn’t stupid, no matter how young she was. Under-informed, yes - but not stupid. Even if she hadn’t much knowledge about her new surroundings (and soon to be new home), that was easily solved. All she needed to do was use a computer and it’d be perfectly fine.

Pulling out a small, rectangular box-like object that hid in her sleeve, she grinned. Her savior was here! The ‘box’ was, in fact, a handheld computer— and she’d be able to use that to work her way around this new area. She toyed around with the device, but she seemed somewhat disappointed. Annoyed, rather. It wasn’t performing like it should have - and there was no explanation for its sudden malfunction, either. For goodness sakes, the stupid thing wouldn’t even turn on! The screen hadn’t flickered on and off to signify there was some sort of trouble with its mechanics - it had just refused to turn on entirely.

Well, wasn’t this just a splendiferous situation?

Without its screen, the object looked like a small, metallic stick. Tsugumi didn’t need useless metallic sticks. She needed help. And without her handheld computer, she’d be stuck asking for directions— she wasn’t one for relying on others, so she’d assumed that she’d fare perfectly fine on her own. Smacking the device against the palm of her hand, a prominent sound - growling, specifically - rumbled in her throat. Not once had her loyal technology failed her— and it wasn’t reassuring to know it picked a time like this to malfunction. This was absolutely ridiculous!>

Out of sheer anger, she threw the device at the ground— with a clear ‘snap’, it had broken into a number of pieces.

“Stupid—!”

Generally, Tsugumi had managed on her own perfectly fine. She’d raised herself as an orphan. The concept of family never was a bother for her, and loneliness happened to be her only friend for a long time. And she’d lived through it all as if there were nothing wrong with it. But, for the first time in what might’ve been a while, she was at a complete standstill. Without being able to access what knowledge was stored in a digital library, she’d never be able to work out what to do.

For the first time in her life, she’d been rendered completely hopeless on her own.
